
Keeping Your Bathroom IR Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere and constant moisture hanging in the air. Since water loves to conduct electricity, a tiny leak in your insulation can lead to a nasty short circuit or a ground fault. That’s why we build our recessed ceiling units to keep the live electrical guts completely separate from that humid air.
How we actually keep the water out
We don’t just hope for the best. We use a mix of high-grade ceramic insulators and sealed gaskets to make sure moisture never touches the terminals. Now, the heating element itself lives inside a quartz tube, but the real danger zone is where the wires connect. To fix that, we use double-insulated wiring and IP-rated enclosures. It stops condensation from creating a “bridge” between the live wire and the metal chassis. **One big tip:**Make sure your grounding wire is bonded directly to the metal housing. If something does go wrong, you want the breaker to trip instantly. You definitely don’t want your ceiling grid becoming live.
Choosing materials that don’t quit
Standard wiring just isn’t enough here. We use silicone-coated leads because they can take the intense heat of the lamp without cracking, and they keep the water out. For the housing, we stick with powder-coated aluminum or stainless steel so you don’t have to deal with rust and corrosion. Here’s the tricky part: shortwave infrared lamps heat up fast—which is great for a cold bathroom—but they create a “chimney effect.” This means moist air gets sucked upward right toward the electronics. To stop that from ruining your day, we use sealed terminal blocks.
A few things to watch during install
A fully sealed unit is a lot safer, but it does trap heat. You can’t just jam the heater into the ceiling. You need to leave a specific gap in the plenum. If you pack it too tight against wooden joists or fiberglass insulation, the internal temperature will skyrocket. Over time, that heat eats away at the wire insulation, and your heater will burn out way sooner than it should. Just double-check your airflow specs before you flip the switch.
