
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be honest: putting an electrical heater in a bathroom is a bit like playing with fire—literally and figuratively. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just inches away from live wires. If you’re aiming for an IP65 rating, you can’t just slap some plastic wrap around the unit and call it a day. You need a real strategy to keep the moisture away from the terminals without choking the heat.
The Battle Against Moisture
The biggest worry here is water creating a “bridge” for electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use high-temp ceramic insulators to keep the heating element completely separate from the chassis. But the real secret is in the details. We use sealed gaskets and potting compounds right where the wires enter the box. Why? Because water is sneaky. It uses something called capillary action to basically “crawl” inside your housing. These seals shut that door tight. And please, for the love of everything,double-check your grounding. You want a solid, continuous earth bond across the whole metal frame. That way, if a seal ever does fail, the RCD trips instantly. It’s the difference between a tripped breaker and the entire heater shell becoming live.
The Heat Trap
Here is the tricky part: when you seal a device tight enough to keep water out, you also trap the heat in. It’s a classic trade-off. To stop the internals from cooking themselves, we build aluminum heat sinks right into the chassis. They pull the heat away from the wiring and vent it out. Just be careful not to push too many watts into a tiny, sealed box. If you overdo it, you’ll melt your wire insulation. You have to find that sweet spot between how much heat you want in the room and how much surface area the enclosure has to breathe.
Getting the Install Right
When it comes to the actual wiring, throw away the standard electrical tape. Steam eats it for breakfast. Use heat-shrink tubing with adhesive linings for every single external connection. You’ll also want IP68-rated cable glands to secure the feed. If those glands are loose or sloppy, your IP65 rating is basically a fairy tale. One last pro tip: mount the unit with aslight tilt. It keeps water from pooling on the lens, which keeps the heater efficient and your bathroom safe.
