
Keeping Your Bathroom Warm (Without the Danger)
Putting heating lamps in a shower or bathroom sounds like a great idea until you remember that bathrooms are basically steam rooms. Water and electricity don’t get along. If a cold drop of water hits a scorching hot infrared lamp, it doesn’t just “glitch.” It can shatter. That’s why we don’t mess around with standard bulbs. We use IPX4-rated enclosures and explosion-proof quartz tubes to keep things safe.
Why “Explosion-Proof” Quartz Matters
Here is the reality: standard quartz tubes hate thermal shock. Imagine a tube running at 800°C. A single splash of water hits it, the glass shrinks instantly in that one spot, and crack. We use reinforced quartz or a protective outer sleeve. This way, even if the inner part fails, the glass stays put. No shards falling into a bathtub. No accidents. Just peace of mind.
Dealing with the Damp (The IPX4 Stuff)
You’ll see the term “IPX4” a lot. In plain English, it just means the unit can handle water splashes coming from any direction. We get this by sealing the electrical terminals and using heavy-duty gaskets. These act like a shield, blocking steam and spray from ever touching the live wires. A cheap plastic cover isn’t enough. The housing has to let the heat out while keeping the guts of the machine bone-dry.
The Trade-off
Nothing is perfect. Adding a protective sleeve or a sealed enclosure puts a bit of material between the heat and your skin. Because of that, you might notice a tiny dip in heat—maybe 5-10% less than a bare bulb. It’s a small price to pay for safety, but to make sure you still feel that cozy warmth, we usually just bump up the wattage. You won’t even notice the difference. One last tip:Put these on a dedicated GFCI circuit. Even with all the IPX4 protection, these lamps pull a lot of power. A clean electrical path keeps the lines from overheating and keeps everything running smooth.
