
Why we’re ditching halogen for IP-rated infrared in the bathroom
I’ve noticed a real shift in how people are spec-ing out bathrooms lately. Those old-school halogen lamp heaters? They’re disappearing. People are moving toward high-standard waterproof infrared units instead. It basically comes down to two things: how they handle steam and how they actually make you feel warm.
The headache with halogen
Here’s the thing about standard halogen bulbs—they just aren’t made for steam. Imagine a scorching hot quartz tube. Now imagine a cloud of thick shower steam hitting it. That’s a recipe for thermal shock. The glass cracks. Even if it stays in one piece, moisture loves to creep into the housing and fry the wiring. Usually, you’re looking at a short circuit or a dead unit within a year. Not exactly a great investment.
A smarter way to handle the wet stuff
Modern infrared heaters fix this by using IP (Ingress Protection) ratings. In plain English? They’re sealed tight. The heating elements and all those messy electrical connections are locked away so steam and splashes can’t get anywhere near the circuitry. But the real magic is in the heat. Halogen tries to warm up the air around you, which is a losing battle in a humid room. Infrared is different. It sends out short-wave radiation that hits you directly. It’s instant. No waiting around for the room to warm up while you’re shivering in a towel.
The trade-offs (because there’s always one)
You can’t just plug these into any old outlet. If you’re installing a high-wattage array, you’ll need a dedicated circuit. Make sure your breakers can handle that initial surge, or you’ll be tripping the power every time you want to get warm. Then there’s the size. A fully waterproofed infrared chassis is a bit chunkier than those slim halogen fixtures. You lose a tiny bit of ceiling space, but you gain a heater that won’t corrode into a piece of junk in a few months. For the contractors and engineers I talk to, the choice is a no-brainer. You spend a bit more on the hardware upfront, and in exchange, you stop getting those annoying callbacks about failed lamps and electrical shorts. It just works. And it actually lasts.
