
Getting More Heat Out of Your IR Reflectors (Without Breaking a Sweat)
If you’ve ever worked with semiconductor wafer rinse stations, you know the struggle. Water is a heat sponge. It sucks energy away from your wafer faster than you can put it in. To get the job done, you need an IR system that slams as much energy as possible onto that surface before the environment steals it all. Most people stick with aluminum reflectors. They’re fine, but they’re leaky. They absorb too much energy, and that’s basically just throwing watts into the trash. That’s why we use gold. Why gold? It sounds fancy, but it’s actually just a practical choice. In the near-infrared spectrum, gold reflects way more energy than polished steel or aluminum. We apply a thin, precise layer of it to the housing to catch the radiation that usually escapes and bounce it right back where it belongs. It turns a scattered glow into a tight, focused beam. Every single watt from your lamp actually hits the wafer. More heat, less power Here is the cool part: we match the lamp’s output to the gold’s peak reflectivity. This means you get a much higher heat density without having to pull more power from the wall. You can keep your equipment small and compact. If you tried to hit these same temperatures with standard reflectors, you’d have to crank the wattage. And we all know what happens then—you risk frying your filaments or melting your housing. A few things to keep in mind Now, gold is amazing for heat, but it’s soft. Really soft. You can’t go in there with abrasive pads or harsh chemicals to scrub them. If you scratch that coating, you’ll end up with “cold spots” on your wafer, which is a nightmare to fix. Just stick to a gentle cleaning routine to keep that mirror finish perfect.
